Winters Become Shorter and Summers Longer in Kyrgyzstan – National Academy of Sciences

AKIPRESS.COM – Winters have become shorter and summers longer, according to Kanatbek Abdrahmatov, the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan.

“Nature knows no bad weather. According to data from the Institute of Geology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, due to climate warming in Chui Valley, the seasons have changed both in duration and in the dates of their start. The duration of winter, according to the Bishkek weather station, decreased from 95 to 71 days, while spring increased slightly by 3 days. Summer extended from 145 to 154 days. The length of autumn, from 1931 to 1960, was 59 days, from 1961 to 1990 it increased to 75 days, and then from 1991 to 2021, it decreased to 71 days. Autumn and winter now arrive later, while spring and summer come earlier. Winters have become shorter, and summers longer! I love summer!” wrote Abdrahmatov on his social media page.

Some farmers emphasize the importance of timely seasonal changes for sowing activities. Kalymbek Mazhitov, the head of Kemin district’s Department of Agricultural Development, reflected on the consequences of a prolonged summer and shortened winter. “I don’t entirely agree with the above opinion. Two years ago, there was a severe drought. In previous years (before 2021), there were always snowfalls in March. Last year, in May, there were frosts. There was also a drought. This year, autumn is as it should be—in its time. Winter has only just begun. If there is no snow, and the autumn weather continues, it will negatively impact next year’s harvest. There may be a drought. If winter does not arrive now and lingers into the spring, it may affect the spring fieldwork. However, winter will show itself in any case. If the weather is unstable, it will be challenging for farmers, so it’s good when winter proceeds as it should. When there are constant rains in spring, it’s also not good because farmers don’t have time for sowing, and summer immediately arrives: the air temperature rises sharply,” he said.
