Tajikistan Plans to Reduce Electricity Losses to 10%

€100 million has already been invested in energy projects

DUSHANBE, September 5. /TASS/. Energy companies in Tajikistan intend to reduce electricity losses to 10% of generated electricity. This was announced by the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic Daler Juma.

“We have a commitment to reduce our losses and increase energy efficiency so [to] reduce losses by up to 10%,” he said, speaking at an investment forum in Tajikistan and Germany.

According to him, the republic also plans to increase electricity production through the implementation of large projects, primarily due to the completion of the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric station, which began under the USSR. “We will continue to rehabilitate our generating capabilities, which have been operating since the 50-60s of the last century. If we combine all this, in the next 15-20 years we plan to [put into operation a capacity of] 5,700 kWh and these projects are already being implemented,” he said.

According to him, Tajikistan has qualified personnel to implement these projects and, thanks to the cooperation of the governments of the republic and Germany, about €100 million have already been invested in them.

On August 30, the Asia-Plus publication, citing data from the country’s energy companies, reported that almost a quarter of the volume of generated electricity is being lost in Tajikistan. According to the publication, in the first half of this year, the country produced about 10 billion 653.3 million kWh of electricity, while losses amounted to more than 2 billion 415 million kWh. It was noted that losses occur during distribution to end consumers, as well as due to theft.
