At present, the shortage of medical staff in the country is 2,463 doctors and 605 nurses, Jamoliddin Abdullozoda, Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Tajikistan, said today at a press conference.

In particular, answering the Asia-Plus question, he said that:

  • 601 doctors and 165 nurses are not enough in the Sughd region;
  • 893 doctors and 10 nurses in Khatlon region;
  • 59 doctors and 40 nurses in Dushanbe;
  • 453 doctors and 153 nurses in cities and districts of republican subordination;
  • 153 doctors and 77 nurses in private medical institutions;
  • 153 doctors and 105 nurses in administrative institutions.

However, the minister did not say what the situation is in GBAO, and how many doctors and nurses there are not enough.

According to him, 21,170 doctors and 61,383 nurses are currently working in medical institutions in Tajikistan, which is 1.8 and 1.7% more than in 2021.

In 2022, 1,518 doctors and nurses were hired.
“Almost 1.5 thousand doctors and nurses left for Russia”
Jamoliddin Abdullozoda also said that last year 1,496 doctors and nurses went on labor migration, and 1,187 of them were nurses.

He noted that not all nurses went to Russia to work: most went to live with their husbands.

The minister did not provide specific statistics on the departure of doctors and nurses during the pandemic, and only added that every doctor who leaves to work abroad and returns to Tajikistan after some time is provided with employment by the Ministry of Health.

“Today there are no obstacles in this direction. We look at his experience, take into account the capabilities of the institution and hire a specialist,” said the Minister of Health.
However, the minister did not answer exactly how many doctors returned to their homeland.

Salaries will increase
Abdullozoda said about the salaries of doctors and nurses that there are some doctors who receive up to 3.5 thousand somoni.

The salary of a nurse depends on the duties, and starts from 1.5 thousand somoni and also reaches 3-3.5 thousand somoni.

“In order to keep doctors, so that they do not go abroad, from July 1, the salaries of medical workers will be increased by 20%. In addition, all mayors, cities and heads of districts are instructed to encourage health and education workers, in particular, by providing them with plots of land,” he explained.
The head of the Ministry of Health said that today the goal of the ministry is to improve the quality of patient care, and for this, workers in the field are sent abroad – to Uzbekistan, Russia, Iran and some European countries for advanced training.
