MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – Our major task is to double trade between the two countries, Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade Khurram Teshabaev told the media ahead of a meeting of Belarus-Uzbekistan joint intergovernmental commission on bilateral cooperation, BelTA has learned.

Samarkand is hosting the tenth meeting of Belarus-Uzbekistan joint intergovernmental commission on bilateral cooperation. The parties are expected to discuss the state and prospects of trade and economic cooperation. In particular, the meeting participants plan to focus on industry, agriculture and healthcare.

“We have been thoroughly preparing for the visit of the Belarusian delegation,” Khurram Teshabaev told journalists, emphasizing that the agenda of bilateral relations was very rich.

“The task is to double the trade between our countries. Of course, there are traditional areas where Belarusian business is very strong. This includes furniture, dairy products, pharmaceuticals – an important area for us. We have specific proposals and projects in all these areas,” Khurram Teshabaev said outlining the range of issues to be discussed.

He added that a business forum featuring representatives of both countries was scheduled to take place in the afternoon. According to the deputy minister, Uzbekistan’s companies show great interest in establishing bilateral business relations.

Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko and Uzbekistan Prime Minister Abdulla Aripov are expected to attend the Uzbek-Belarusian business forum.

More than 60 representatives of Belarus (ministries and agencies, concerns, enterprises and organizations) are expected to take part in the business forum. They will focus on machine building, light and food industry, woodworking, pharmaceuticals, veterinary medicine, and wholesale trade. Some 200 representatives of Uzbekistan’s authorities and companies will attend the forum. In 2022, mutual trade exceeded $500 million. This year’s plan, as Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Leonid Zayats has said earlier, is to increase last year’s figures.

Belarus and Uzbekistan are interested in the emergence of new cooperation projects. This was stated at the meeting of the prime ministers of the two countries in Bishkek on October 25. A delegation of the Belarusian government is on a working visit to Kyrgyzstan to participate in meetings with colleagues from the SCO, CIS and EAEU. The meetings of the councils of these associations will start on October 26, while bilateral talks are on the schedule today. They discussed with the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan what has been done. The trade in 2023 exceeded last year’s volume of 500 million dollars. Both exports and imports are growing. Joint ventures are emerging. Today, it is important to concentrate work on the areas identified by the two presidents.

Roman Golovchenko, Prime Minister of Belarus:

“First of all, we plan to hold a meeting of the intergovernmental commission. This is our main working body, which should work out a new agenda for expanding cooperation. The second task within the framework of the work of the commission and our contacts is to elaborate or update the roadmap for the development of cooperation between Belarus and Uzbekistan in the coming years, to saturate it with new directions.”

The agreements include the holding of an international medical forum in Minsk and a Forum of Regions in Tashkent in the near future.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko appeared in public on Tuesday and dismissed talk he was seriously ill, telling officials, “I’m not going to die, guys,” according to a video shown by a state-run media outlet said.

Lukashenko, 68, is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies. Rumours about the state of his health have circulated since he appeared at a military parade in Moscow on May 9, looking tired and a little unsteady.

Lukashenko, sounding hoarse, told a meeting on health issues that he had been suffering from an adenovirus, which is a common cold virus. Footage of the encounter was broadcast by Pul Pervovo, a state outlet that reports on Lukashenko’s activities.

“If someone thinks I am going to die, calm down,” Lukashenko said, adding that while it only took three days to recover from such a virus, he had been too busy to take time off immediately.

“I’m not going to die, guys. You’ll have to struggle with me for a very long time to come,” he said.

Exiled Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya told her supporters on Monday to be ready to grab any chance to turn her country into a democracy.

Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus with an iron first since 1994, last year allowed Russian forces to use his country as a launch pad for the invasion of Ukraine.

An agreement between Russia and Belarus to allow the deployment of Russian nuclear warheads in Belarus earned the European Union’s condemnation on Friday as the bloc’s foreign policy chief warned against “further escalation.”

“This is a step which will lead to further extremely dangerous escalation,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement.

Russia moved ahead on Thursday with its plan to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, whose leader said the warheads were already on the move. The plan was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in March.

On Thursday, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said he was signing documents in Minsk on the process for storing weapons of such kind in Belarus.

Borrell said the decision contravened multiple international agreements.

“We call on Russia to abide by these commitments,” he said.

“The Belarusian regime is an accomplice in Russia’s illegal and unprovoked war of aggression against Ukraine,” Borrell added.

“We call on Belarusian authorities to put an immediate end to their support of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, and reverse decisions that can only contribute to heightening tensions in the region, and undermine Belarus’ sovereignty.”

He said any attempt “to further escalate the situation will be met by a strong and coordinated reaction”.
