Russia claims that two American strategic bombers were approaching the Russian border over the Baltic Sea, the Pentagon responded that there was an “interaction” between its two B-1 bombers and Russian aircraft.
According to the Russian National Defense Control Center, two American strategic (i.e. capable of carrying nuclear weapons) bombers were previously seen near Russian airspace over the Baltic Sea.
In response to this, the Su-27 fighter was lifted into the air. The Ministry of Defense did not specify exactly when this incident occurred.
“The crew of the Russian fighter aircraft classified the air targets as two US Air Force B-1B strategic bombers and took over the established air watch zone,” the center said.
“After the removal of foreign military aircraft from the state border of the Russian Federation, the Russian fighter returned to its base airfield,” the Russian military said.
According to CNN, the Pentagon confirmed that there was an “interaction” between two of its B-1 bombers and Russian aircraft.
“It is my understanding that this was a safe and professional interaction with Russian aircraft. So there is nothing important to report on this,” Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said at a press briefing on Tuesday.
