International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism (21 August 2023)

Today, 21 August, on the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, France pays tribute to the memory of those whose lives have been snatched away by acts of barbarism. France lends its support to the victims and their families.

In the past, our country has faced several waves of terrorist actions. It has therefore been quick to take on board the security challenges posed by the threat of terrorism and violent radicalization.

France’s goal is to neutralize terrorist activities, directly on our territory but also beyond our borders, to protect our fellow citizens wherever they are, in close cooperation with our allies facing the same challenges.

As the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mme Catherine Colonna, reiterated at the ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition against Daesh on 8 June, France is totally determined to continue the fight against terrorism, be it in the Levant, Africa, Afghanistan or Central Asia. She recalled that since 2017 France has continuously been engaged in stabilization and humanitarian aid in Iraq and Syria.

We repeat that terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, is one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. Acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, whatever their motives, whenever and by whomever they are committed.
