China’s Special Representative Li Hui visited France. In Paris, he discussed China’s so-called “peace plan” for the war in Ukraine.
Li Hui met with French Foreign Ministry Director General for Politics and Security Frédéric Mondoloni in Paris. The Special Representative said that Beijing, on the basis of its “peace plan,” is ready to strengthen dialogue with the parties to resolve the “crisis in Ukraine.”
According to the Chinese diplomat, recently “a consensus has been reached and the foundation has been laid” for such a settlement. The Special Representative also noted that there are “many consensuses on the Ukrainian issue” between China and France.
At the same time, the French diplomat said that France and China, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, should strengthen the dialogue, in particular, on the issue of Ukraine.
“The French side attaches great importance to the visit of Special Representative Li Hui and expects China to continue to play a constructive role in the ceasefire and war,” Mondoloni said.
What preceded this
From the very beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, China did not condemn Russian aggression, but did not officially support the Kremlin either. At the same time, Beijing has stepped up economic cooperation with Russia.
China announced its intention to act as a peacemaker and published the so-called “peace plan”. However, in Ukraine, Europe and the United States criticized Beijing’s “peace initiatives”, recalling its ties with the Russian Federation. China sent its special envoy to Ukraine to discuss the settlement of the war. The diplomat visited not only Kyiv, but also Poland and France, and then will go to Moscow.
At the same time, France believes that China can act as an intermediary between Ukraine and Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron called on Chinese leader Xi Jinping to influence Russia.
