ASTANA – Radmir Khaibullin, an 11-year-old accordionist, took the Trophée Mondial de l’Accordéon, securing first place in the Classique category of 12 and under.

Trophée Mondial de l’Accordéon is a prestigious event for accordion players globally with a history of over 70 years. Since 2020, the competition has been held online, which was quite challenging for the young player.

Khaibullin presented a video performance featuring works “Fugue in D major” by Johann Sebastian Bach, “Love Song” by Mark Fradkin, and “Fast Train” by Yuri Gavrilov. With this set, he triumphed at the French contest, bringing the first international open trophée to Kazakhstan.

Khaibullin is a fifth-grade boarding school student for gifted children at the Kazakh National University of Arts. He was just five years old when he first took the accordion.

Khaibullin is preparing for the upcoming national competition Astana Merey and an international competition in Barnaul, where he will represent Kazakhstan with Ruslan Turayev, his teacher and accomplished laureate of international music competitions, in December.

Belt and Road link to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan has been delayed by cost debate

TOKYO — Chinese Premier Li Qiang called for accelerated cooperation on a planned international railway linking China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan during a visit to the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek on Wednesday, Russian and Chinese state media reported.

China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan reached a basic agreement in September 2022 on an international railway connecting the three countries. Construction was expected to begin this fall, but China reportedly decided to postpone the project due to differences over construction cost sharing.

With a struggling economy, Kyrgyzstan is unable to bear the huge expense of the project. The country already has significant external debt after receiving massive aid loans from China. Constructing the new railway could increase its reliance on Beijing.

The planned railway, part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, would have a total length of 454 kilometers and is expected to cost $3 billion to $6 billion.

It is part of China’s outreach to resource-rich Central Asia, a region long under Russian influence that is seeking to improve its connections with the global economy.

The primary overland route from China through Central Asia to Europe and the Arabian Sea now runs mostly through Kazakhstan. Achieving rail transport through Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan would help increase transport volume and contribute to the development of routes that avoid Russia.

Li is on an official visit to Kyrgyzstan this week and met with the country’s Prime Minister Akylbek Japarov on Wednesday. On Thursday, he will attend a leaders’ meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, whose members include China, Russia and Central Asian countries.

The route was launched in collaboration with the Air Connectivity Program (ACP) as part of flynas’ ambitious expansion plans.

The inaugural event, attended by representatives from the Air Connectivity Program, flynas, and Jeddah Airports Company (JEDCO), celebrated the commencement of non-stop flights from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah to Osh International Airport. Generally favorable conditions for spring grain planting will see Kazakhstan harvest 14 million tonnes of wheat in marketing year 2023-24, according to a Global Agricultural Information Network report from the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture.

The latest forecast for wheat is 1 million tonnes higher than FAS Post Astana’s original outlook in April with no significant changes to planted area at 12.9 million hectares, about 10,000 more hectares than 2022-23. Kazakhstan is estimated to have produced 16.4 million tonnes of wheat the previous marketing year.

Wheat exports are seen at 9.5 million tonnes, the same as 2022-23 estimates, but higher than the 8.09 million tonnes shipped in 2021-22. At 2.99 million tonnes, beginning stocks are significantly higher than the 1.49 million tonnes in 2022-23, the result of export restrictions imposed in 2021-22.

“Producers and exporters noted that challenges they faced in 2022-23 of limited rail capacity, outdated infrastructure, and delayed Value Added Tax (VAT) reimbursements would continue affecting wheat exports in 2023-24,” FAS said.

Domestic wheat consumption for the Central Asian nation’s 19 million people is projected at 6.8 million tonnes, a number expected to remain stable for the next few years, according to traders. In April 2023, Kazakhstan implemented a six-month ban on wheat imports by road in response to competition from Russia. Barley production also showed promise this spring, with FAS expecting a harvest of 3 million tonnes for 2023-24 from 2.35 million planted hectares. This is down from 3.3 million tonnes the previous year but up from 2.36 million tonnes in 2021-22. Barley consumption, which is mainly used for animal feed, is estimated at 2 million tonnes in 2023-24.
