Newspaper “Farage”: Western sanctions strengthen cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia
On February 4, 2023, the Farage website published an article entitled “European sanctions against Russia: their benefits for Tajikistan and strengthening cooperation between countries.”
The author of the article claims that Western sanctions against Russia “created a favorable environment for cooperation and opened up new opportunities for the countries of Central Asia.” The article says that Tajikistan should establish close and mutually beneficial cooperation with Russia and actively enter the Russian market.
The material provides several examples of successful cooperation between the two countries.
- Growth in exports of dried fruits from Tajikistan to the Russian market by more than a third in 2022. It is noted that products from Tajikistan are in good demand among Russian consumers.
- Rejection of the US dollar in mutual settlements of businessmen from Tajikistan and Russia. “Tajikistan benefits from a gradual transition to national currencies in mutual settlements due to the large volumes of migrants’ remittances, which far exceed the amount of goods imported from Russia. The transition from US dollars to rubles in trade settlements with Russia is one of the points of the anti-crisis plan of the government of Tajikistan, approved by a government decision in March 2022.
The author concludes that the geopolitical and economic challenges of 2022 have significantly strengthened trade cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia.
Newspaper “USSR”: assistance of the people of the Tajik SSR to blockaded Leningrad
The newspaper of the USSR published an article dedicated to the anniversary of the lifting of the blockade of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War. The author recalls the feat of the unbroken Leningraders and how all the peoples of the USSR tried to help the city besieged by the enemy.
“For the fascist invaders, the capture of Leningrad was a paramount task. The enemy surrounded the city and dropped 2,500 high-explosive bombs on it, destroying plants and factories, schools and medical facilities. The Nazis wanted to raze the city to the ground and destroy the population. But neither the cruel bombings of the enemy, nor the cold and hunger could break the will and faith of the Leningraders in Victory. Residents of the Tajik SSR did not stand aside. The Tajiks fought at the front, and the civilian population from the deep rear actively helped the besieged Leningrad.
“In 1942, Tajikistan sent 2 million 225 thousand soums, 150 tons of wheat, 130 tons of vegetables, 80 tons of fresh and dried fruits, 2250 heads of cattle to the defenders of Leningrad and the sailors of the Baltic.” The blockade of Leningrad was finally lifted on January 27, 1944. It lasted 872 days.
Newspaper “Tojikiston”: Tajiks are worried about the increase in food prices
On February 8, 2023, the Tojikiston newspaper published an article entitled “Export was banned, but prices are rising. Why?”. The material refers to the increase in prices for vegetables, despite the ban on the export of onions, potatoes and carrots. The author claims that onions have risen in price by 4 times compared to last year, and other vegetables – by almost 2 times.
“They say that the cost of vegetables will decrease only after the release of a new crop on the market. But that’s still three months away. How much will onions cost in the country by this time? 15 somoni? Who is responsible for raising prices and why are they not taking action?” – asks the author.
He cites data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Tajikmatlubot (Tajikpotrebsoyuz), from which it follows that there are “large stocks” of products in warehouses.
“Why aren’t these stocks brought to market? How much longer do you have to wait? After all, the shortage of goods on the counter is the first reason for the rise in price of any products.
